Chapter 3 - Data Browsing
 
This section provides access directly to the data in the dataset.  The excel pivot tables and reports on these pages allow the user to browse around the data and investigate.  Most of these reports and the pivot tables, currently only cover the core variables (core variables are highlighted in blue in the variable listings available from the Dataset Information page).  We will be adding reports and pivot tables that include the rest of the variables soon.
 
Excel Spreadsheet Navigation

Enable hosting of excel spreadsheets in the web pages.  These spreadsheets can be browsed and expanded but they are not writeable. 
 
Navigation
In some cases, there will often be more spreadsheet rows and columns available than you can see without scrolling. The scrolling bars on the side and bottom of the sheet allow you to move around most of the spreadsheet.  If there are more spreadsheet columns and rows available than the scroll bars can show you, the directional arrows in the upper left corner of the spreadsheet will allow you to scroll to the additional rows and columns on the sheet. If there are + symbols in the left hand column of the sheet, you can click on these to expand the category.  Click the - sign to recollapse the category.
 
These spreadsheets can also be downloaded but keep in mind that at the moment only the excel 2007 versions of these spreadsheets are available.
 
Excel Pivot Table Navigation
The pivot tables available on the web pages provide extensive navigation and configuration opportunities.  Using as an example, the Site Drill Down pivot table that can be found in the Data Browsing tab.  This pivot table has been laid out with years as the rows and datumtypes as the columns.  The page filters (upper left corner) specify the limits to put on what is shown in the pivot table.  In this pivot table the filters are "Site Name", "Offset", and "Exdatumtype". Initially the site is set to Italy - Sardinia/Arca di Noe.  To change to a different site, click on the funnel symbol to the right of the site name and choose a different site in the window that pops up by unchecking the current site and checking a different site.  If you select more than one site, you will get an aggregation across the sites you select. When you are done with making selections hit the OK button. The offset and exdatumtype can be selected the same way. Initially all the datumtypes are displayed. To change what datum types are displayed, choose the arrow to the right of the "Column Labels" heading. Then open the datumtype and choose "Filter".  This opens up a window that allows you to choose which datumtypes you would like displayed.  Clear the check mark if you do not want the datumtype displayed by clicking on the box next to the datumtype. Checking the "select all" and then clearing it is an easy way to clear the entire list. To change the years shown in the rows, you can use filters.  The + sign to the left of each year enables drill-down to the day level.  Click on the + sign to expand a year.
